Today’s change will be about one of our last transformation (non visual but in term of feature) on our journey on transforming the default session in Ubuntu Artful. For more background on this, you can refer back to our decisions regarding our default session experience as discussed in my blog post. Day 7: Application indicator support in the ubuntu session As mentioned in day 6, we discussed about indicators. Indeed, we are thinking about providing a solution working for us while not exposing the whole systray content for some specific cases like Instant Messaging applications (empathy, skype…), emails (thunderbird, evolution…) or sync (dropbox…) applications.

Ubuntu GNOME Shell in Artful: Day 6

Today’s change is hopefully an unnoticeable change for most of you, but gives better security, a smoother and great experience on our journey on transforming the default session in Ubuntu Artful. And here we go, the finale big change before we get further along now that our Feature Freeze deadline is approaching.

Ubuntu GNOME Shell in Artful: Day 3

After introducing yesterday a real GNOME vanilla session, let’s see how we are using this to implement small behavior differences and transforming current Ubuntu Artful. For more background on this, you can refer back to our decisions regarding our default session experience as discussed in my blog post. Day 3: a story of sound and collaboration… Some devices have very low volume even when pushed at their maximum. One example for this is the x220 when most of videos on youtube, or listening to music in rhythmbox doesn’t give great results even at maximum volume.

Let’s continue our journey and progress on transforming current Ubuntu Artful. Day 2: and the GNOME vanilla session rises… Today is about differentiating our Ubuntu and GNOME vanilla session to provide different defaults per session. Remember that the GNOME “vanilla” session yesterday was looking like this: After upgrading today, there is a whole new layout, very close to a pure upstream GNOME default look: What can we notice?

Ubuntu GNOME Shell in Artful: Day 1

And here we go! I’m going to report here day by day the progress we are making in Ubuntu Artful after taking our decisions regarding our default session experience as discussed in my last blog post. Day 1: differentiating ubuntu and GNOME vanilla session Let’s start with the ground work and differentiate our two “ubuntu” and “gnome” sessions. Until today, they were pixel by pixel identical. Now are migrating some GNOME Session changes as well as some GNOME Shell ones in Artful.

Ubuntu @ GUADEC 2017 and plans for GNOME Shell migration

My first GUADEC was 8 years ago, but it’s been a couple of years I haven’t been to that conference. I can say that GUADEC 2017 in Manchester was a real blast! Ubuntu had a very strong presence this year, people from Canonical, even if some only stayed for few days (Chris, Iain, Ken, Matthew, Robert, Will, Sébastien and I) and from Ubuntu GNOME via Tim Lunn, giving his perspective in a talk for this Ubuntu flavor.

ubuntu booth and conferences at jdll 2016

The "Journée Du Logiciel Libre" are a very nice event in Lyon (France) over a full week-end where the public is invited to come, talk and assist conferences around free software. Of course, the Ubuntu-fr team is present and have a nice booth here. I'm also present and give a talk about snappy Ubuntu Core against a full attendance room! Followed by an hour workshop more focused on developers.

Ubuntu Make 16.03 features Eclipse JEE, Intellij EAP, Kotlin and a bunch of fixes!

I'm really delighted to announce a new Ubuntu Make release, scoring 16.03, bringing updates for a bunch of frameworks while introducing new support! I'm also really proud as this new release features three new awesome contributors: Tankypon, adding the Superpowers game editor framework, Eakkapat Pattarathamrong, adding more tests for Visual Studio Code, and Almeida, doing some great updates to the portuguese translations! The returning awesome work from Galileo Sartor an Omer Sheikh got us new Eclipse JEE installation support, IntelliJ IDEA EAP and Kotlin compiler.
