Ubuntu GNOME Shell in Artful: Day 7

Today’s change will be about one of our last transformation (non visual but in term of feature) on our journey on transforming the default session in Ubuntu Artful. Day 7: Application indicator support in the ubuntu session As mentioned in day 6, we discussed about indicators. Indeed, we are thinking about providing a solution working for us while not exposing the whole systray content for some specific cases like Instant Messaging applications (empathy, skype…), emails (thunderbird, evolution…) or sync (dropbox…) applications.

Ubuntu GNOME Shell in Artful: Day 3

After introducing yesterday a real GNOME vanilla session, let’s see how we are using this to implement small behavior differences and transforming current Ubuntu Artful. Day 3: a story of sound and collaboration… Some devices have very low volume even when pushed at their maximum. One example for this is the x220 when most of videos on youtube, or listening to music in rhythmbox doesn’t give great results even at maximum volume.

And here we go! I’m going to report here day by day the progress we are making in Ubuntu Artful after taking our decisions regarding our default session experience as discussed in my last blog post. Day 1: differentiating ubuntu and GNOME vanilla session Let’s start with the ground work and differentiate our two “ubuntu” and “gnome” sessions. Until today, they were pixel by pixel identical. Ubuntu @ GUADEC 2017 and plans for GNOME Shell migration

My first GUADEC was 8 years ago, but it’s been a couple of years I haven’t been to that conference. I can say that GUADEC 2017 in Manchester was a real blast! Ubuntu had a very strong presence this year, people from Canonical, even if some only stayed for few days (Chris, Iain, Ken, Matthew, Robert, Will, Sébastien and I) and from Ubuntu GNOME via Tim Lunn, giving his perspective in a talk for this Ubuntu flavor.

Ubuntu Make as a classic snap: other distro versions and continuous delivery

This is a suite of blog posts explaining how we snapped Ubuntu Make which is a complex software study case with deep interactions with the system. For more background on this, please refer to our first blog post. For how we got here, have a look at the last blog post. Testing on 14.04 LTS Ok, we now have a working classic snap on 16.04 LTS. However, we saw that a word of caution needs to be taken care of due to the way classic snaps enable us to access the system.
